New greenhouse in Fulham Palace historic walled garden
Project Type: Public. Fulham Palace
Location: The Walled Garden, Fulham Palace, Fulham, London
Age/Listing: 15th to 18th century – Grade II
Project duration: 2023-2025
Project outline:
The walled garden dates to the mid-18th century when Bishop Terrick redesigned much of Fulham Palace’s landscape, although the walls date from the mid/late C15, altered early C16 and rebuilt c.1765. Reopened in 2012 after an extensive restoration, it includes a knot garden, vinery, kitchen garden, apple orchard, apple tree arch, bee hives, grass lawns and borders along the walls filled with flowers and fruit trees.
This project was initiated to make the walled garden more usable and welcoming, while creating extra space for visitors to enjoy. The aim was to boost public appreciation and involvement, helping people connect more deeply with both the garden and Fulham Palace itself. The design was carefully developed to strengthen the walled garden’s role within the Fulham Palace site, all while keeping any impact on the surrounding heritage features to an absolute minimum. Where changes were necessary, they were very limited and considered to be at the lowest end of what is considered to be “less than substantial”. All works were carried out with great care and sensitivity, under the supervision of the Fulham Palace community archaeologist. The result was a thoughtful balance between preserving the historic character of the site and opening it up for greater public engagement.
