Royal Hospital Chelsea Stable Block – Refurbishment

Repair and conservation works at the Royal Hospital Chelsea Stables

We are working with the Royal Hospital Chelsea on the repair and conservation of the John Soane designed stable block. We are working to carefully convert the stable yard into a visitors’ centre to include cafe, museum, outreach and exhibition spaces. The current stable block was built on the site of an older Christopher Wren designed stable yard and evidence of this older building have been found in reused brickwork and footings.

The stable block is grade II* listed: Stable yard, 1814-1817. John Soane. Yellow brick. Two storeys, around courtyard. Facade of 3 bays. Central arched entrance in arched reveal, with arched windows and entrances in repeated arched reveals to each side. Two chimneys with stone acrotria. To left and right one-storey lodges with pyramidal slate roofs and central arches flanked by niches.
